Finally we got a great day for spearfishing here in NZ.....has been a very poor summer.
So....we went to a spot in about 20m of water - vis was all but to the bottom. When I got into the water I immediately saw schools of kingfish swimming around...game on! Got my first one back to the jetski and told my mate Mike to get in....sure enough, once he got in the water all the kingfish had disappeared....dang! So we hunted around and I managed to get another one - signalled to Mike who came over and shot a really nice size one hanging around my speared fish.
Score - Andy 2....Mike 1
We then spent some time practicing some deep dives and looking at schools of Trevally, snapper and other bait fish....an amazing array of species...even a John Dory was hunting. Eventually we had another school of kingfish come over for a look - Mike took a shot and bounced it off the head (no good), and I shot one towards the tail (not ideal). So my fish went deep quickly pulling hard....as I watched it a dark shape came in to view... I thought is was a massive kingfish - then realised that it was a shark checking out my kingy! I yelled to Mike that we had a shark and he came over. I felt the line go slack and thought - ah well, shark must have eaten the fish WRONG! As I turned to look down again I couldn't believe what I saw - the kingfish was swimming straight at me with the shark (2 m Bronze Whaler) hard on its tail! I tried to grab the fish but it then swam over to my mate and hung around him....looking for protection! We grouped up and watched the magnificent shark circle us - not too aggressively - he just wanted a free feed. Eventually I got my hands on the fish and we swam it to the boat - Mike kept an eye on the shark while I put it on the Jetski...and then he got up and we left.
An amazing sight - my first close encounter with a shark...a real buzz. Fortunately he was not very aggressive and turned before we could touch him with our spears....but the clear water gave us an amazing view of this incredible fish.
